Cape Verde, a uniquely beautiful archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, offers visitors breathtaking scenery and a rich local cuisine and culture. Before embarking on this trip, it is important to be aware of vaccinations and other precautions for traveling to Cape Verde. Travel advice may be essential to ensure a safer trip.

Vaccinations before traveling to Cape Verde: Key recommendations

Before traveling to this beautiful destination, travelers are strongly advised to ensure that they are up to date with their basic vaccinations according to the national immunization program of their country of origin. In addition, health authorities recommend the following vaccinations for all persons traveling to Cape Verde:

  • Hepatitis A: Hepatitis A is an infectious disease that can be contracted through the consumption of contaminated food or water.
  • Typhoid fever: Also transmitted by drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food, typhoid fever can cause serious symptoms.

International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP):

While not a mandatory requirement for all travelers, it is advisable that individuals aged one and above, traveling from or transiting through regions at risk of yellow fever transmission, should possess the International Certificate of Vaccination.

Malaria:

Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, presents a low risk on the islands of Santiago and Boa Vista between August and November, with only one case recorded in 2012. On the other islands, the risk is minimal. Nevertheless, it is advisable to take precautions against insect bites throughout your stay.

Other risks to consider when traveling may include:

    • Altitude: Cape Verde has areas of high altitude. Sensitive travelers may experience altitude related symptoms such as general malaise and difficulty breathing.
    • Dengue fever: Transmitted by mosquitoes, dengue fever is a concern in Cape Verde. Measures to prevent mosquito bites are essential.
    • Zika virus: Although cases have decreased significantly, there is still a risk of contracting Zika virus through mosquito bites.

It is advisable to consult a health professional before traveling. They will be able to advise you on specific preventive measures and any additional health problems associated with travelling to Cape Verde. Being well informed and prepared is essential for a safe and stress-free trip.
