Turkey is a well-known and highly sought-after holiday destination. However, many of its cities remain a well-kept secret. To help you plan your next adventure, we've highlighted Turkey's best cities to visit, whether they appeal to you for their history and culture or their vibrant nightlife.

5 cities to visit in Turkey

Istanbul

Istanbul, with a population of approximately 16 million, is a vibrant metropolis that offers a non-stop, dynamic environment. The city, situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia by the Bosphorus Strait, was once home to the Ottoman and Byzantine empires. It still preserves some traces of these very different cultures today.

The Sultanahmet neighborhood is a prime example of a location where Ottoman and Byzantine influences are evident, and it is home to a number of the city's most popular tourist attractions. Notable among these is the Blue Mosque, distinguished by its impressive minarets, and the Hagia Sophia, a mosque that was originally constructed as a church. Other notable attractions in this area of the city include Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern.

A visit to a Turkish bath or a performance of a dervish dance show, which features men spinning continuously, are experiences that should be on every itinerary. For a more contemporary experience of Istanbul, Arnavutköy and Taksim are two locations that offer a vibrant nightlife scene.

Antalya

Antalya competes with Istanbul for the title of "most visited Turkish city". Although much smaller than Istanbul, the capital of the Turquoise Coast boasts an old town full of character, a beautiful harbor and several magnificent beaches - such as Cirali, Konyaalti and Patara.

While many tourists opt to remain at seaside resorts, it is worthwhile to venture beyond the sun lounger to explore Antalya. The old town, Kaleiçi, comprises a labyrinth of streets with mosques, ancient walls, red-roofed stone buildings, and parks that reflect Ottoman influence. These alleys lead to the port, where visitors will find a variety of cafes and restaurants open day and night.

Ankara

Although Turkey's capital may be overshadowed by the more famous Istanbul, Ankara offers a unique experience away from the hustle and bustle of urban centers and vibrant coastal retreats.

At the top of the city is Anit Kabir, the vast mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the pioneering figure who shaped modern Turkey. Hisar is home to a number of Roman monuments, which coexist with the Byzantine citadel walls that surround small Ottoman-era villages. Other points of historical interest include the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the War of Independence Museum. The city boasts two distinctive green spaces: Kugulu and Genclik Parks.

Bodrum

Bodrum is ideal for a summer vacation in Turkey. Located on the coast between lush green hills, the city has beautiful beaches such as Yahsi and Aspat, several tourist sites and a lively nightlife.

Furthermore, visitors have the opportunity to explore the city's rich history. The site, formerly known as Halicarnassus, features a mausoleum, ancient ruins, a Roman theater, and Bodrum Castle, which dates back approximately 700 years.

In addition to the ruins and sun loungers, there is much more to do. Scuba diving is popular in Gokova Bay. Boat trips around the peninsula or on the Dalyan River make for a great afternoon. Wine tasting at Karnas Vineyards is also an option, and the proximity to Kos allows for a trip to Greece.

Izmir

Izmir is sometimes overlooked in favor of neighboring Bodrum, but Turkey's third largest city offers a wealth of art, culture and rich heritage. In addition to the idyllic coastal resorts of Cesme, Alacati and Urla.

The city's infrastructure is centered around Izmir Bay and the Kordon promenade. The 20th-century Clock Tower, situated in the middle of Konak Square, marks the entrance to the 17th-century Kemeralti Market, a labyrinthine complex. The Turkish Bazaar extends to the Roman Agora, with the ancient fortress of Kadifekale representing another significant historical site.
