The Amalfi Coast, located in southern Italy, is one of the most charming and picturesque coastal areas in the world. It's a coastline that stretches for around 50km in the Campania region, very close to Naples, with colourful villages, vertiginous cliffs and stunning beaches. In this article, we'll explore one of the best routes on the Amalfi Coast, showing you the most impressive destinations along this marvellous coastline.

Routes on the Amalfi Coast: when to go and what to visit

The end of April and the whole of May offer ideal conditions for exploring the Amalfi Coast. During this period, the plants and flowers are exuberant, the climate is mild, and the coastal towns are coming to life. In addition, it's easier to enjoy your trip without crowds. September and early October can also be an excellent option, as the weather is still quite pleasant, and you can avoid the crowds.

Day 1: Arrival in Naples and Positano

The nearest airport to the Amalfi Coast is Naples-Capodichino. From there, take a bus or hire car to Positano, one of the region's most charming towns. Spend the afternoon exploring the narrow, winding streets lined with shops, cafés, and seaside restaurants. Don't forget to admire the iconic view of the colourful houses perched on the cliffs and the Church of Santa Maria Asunta.

Day 2: Amalfi and Ravello

Drive along the coast to Amalfi, the town that gives the region its name. Visit the magnificent Cathedral of St Andrew and stroll through the picturesque streets lined with local craft shops. Then continue to Ravello, a charming village perched high on a hill. Explore the stunning gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, which offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean.

Day 3: Praiano and Grotta dello Smeraldo

Spend the day relaxing in the quiet town of Praiano, a charming seaside village with small beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy a day in the sun on Marina di Praia beach or Fiordo di Furore beach. Venture out on a boat trip to the Grotta dello Smeraldo, an impressive sea cave known for its crystal blue waters and fascinating rock formations.

Day 4: Sorrento

Although not technically part of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is often included in itineraries of the region due to its proximity and unique charm. Spend the day exploring Sorrento's historic centre, visit St Andrew's Cathedral and try the region's traditional drink, limoncello, made with local lemons.

Day 5: Hiking and exploring

Take advantage of your last day on the Amalfi Coast to go hiking along the stunning coastal paths. One of the most famous paths is the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods). Enjoy the spectacular cliffs and sea views before saying goodbye to this magical region.

As you explore the Amalfi Coast, take some time to visit Naples. Stroll through its historic centre, visit the National Archaeological Museum and the Cappella Sansevero Museum, enjoy Neapolitan pizza, take in the seaside views from Lungomare Avenue and have a taste of the local nightlife. And why not take an excursion to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius? Naples offers an enriching experience that will complement your visit to the Amalfi Coast.
