What was the Colossus of Rhodes?
The Colossus of Rhodes was a gigantic statue dedicated to Helios, the Greek god of the sun, built in the 3rd century BC to celebrate the victory of the city of Rhodes over a military siege. The statue was designed by the sculptor Cares de Lindos, a disciple of the famous Lysippus, and construction took around 12 years, using advanced techniques for working bronze on a large scale. Some 56 years after completion, a strong earthquake caused the Colossus to break at the knees and fall.
What happened to the ruins of the Colossus?
